Matt you may have already seen the follow-up email I sent to the eGroup
but here are the two photos
http://www.1bigred.com/jayc/letterbox/0570.jpg
http://www.1bigred.com/jayc/letterbox/0571.jpg

I take the standard 3.5x5" 100 page un-ruled notebook 0570.jpg and split
it into 3 or 4 smaller notebooks...

Also, my two LB pages are http://www.1bigred.com/jayc/letterbox/sunsetnc.htm

Log Books

From: deeutz68 (DeeUtz68@aol.com) | Date: 2003-07-14 23:25:03 UTC
I'm sitting here working on my log book, and was wondering how
everyone else organizes their log books. I have printed out the who,
what, when and where of the stamps I have as well as the found date
then I cut them out and glue them into the book beside the stamp. If
it's a park and the park had a map, I am gluing that on the oposite
side of those stamps. I keep my series together, hitch hikers
together, etc. I even have a page just for our personal stamps, and
plan to make a place for ones we place as well.

Does anyone else organize their books? How? Or are you just a random
stamper?

Curious mind want to know!

Mine is a mishmash arranged tentatively around chronological order. Each stamp goes on the right-facing page, with a title that consists of box name, park name, date found. Then on the left-facing page goes the narrative. But it's all together, found boxes, placed box stamps, personal stamps (I have three versions of my husband's trail stamp *grin*). I try to get fairly detailed (or as detailed as space permits) in the narrative- who was there, what the weather was like, history of the area, amusing anecdotes, blah blah blah.

Your way sounds much more organized and interesting, though. I like the trail map idea...I might have to steal that one!

Cheers,

Delirium

We use a 5.5" x 8.5" Strathmore Sketch Pad. It's their 400 Series recycled, acid free, medium weight, lightly textured pad and I user this one because of the size and the acid free and the recycled content.

On each page, I split it in 1/2 by drawing a line on it and then, in that area, I place the found stamp in the upper left corner. From there down, like a newspaper column past a picture, I write specifics. Date, Time, Number, The rating on the ease of location and then a description of the clues that lead us there.

On the backside I place the names of who was on this trek.

You guys are really organized!! I use a sketchpad, and its kind of
a cross between letterboxing and travel journal. I write in my
journal when I'm on vacation about our trip and stuff we've done,
funny stuff etc. And since I'm always letterboxing while on
vacation, I keep it in the same place. As for letterboxing info, I just
write a note about the search, weather, mishaps, first finder stuff
etc. As well as the date time and name of the letterbox. I like that
they're together because When I go back and read my travel
stories, it makes me read the letterbox stories too. That's it.

I do this with a group of children, so not all may find this of use. They
each have a lined composition book, the kind used in school. It's a good
size for toting around and the extra hard covers help with the rough travel
the books are treated to. At a minimum, each box has a page with it's stamp,
the name of the box and city it was found in, the date it was found, name of
the series (if it is part of one), and a print out of the clues.

Some kids plan to just go this far with it, others intend to every six
months or year, tear out the stamped pages and create a scrapbook type
permanent record, where they can add in other items from the hikes. I bring
along a camera, though we usually are having so much fun that we forget to
actually take any photos. If I do remember to take a few shots, I give each
kid their own copies to add as well. We have a couple of budding artists who
also like to sketch or paint the locations where we find the boxes and, once
dry, those get tucked into the book.

the scientist in me has an excel spreadsheet on the inside cover of a black
book...so I can quantify the PFX ratio with ease. The rest is part random and
mostly categorized according to stamp sizes, with a small log book you have
to get creative with how the stamps fit. Some pages are even similar in colors,
similar sizes so I like to organize my log with visual appeal in mind...

though the excel spreadsheet really helps me...

and satisfies the number crunching field scientist in all of us.

Also - all my notes are in pencil. Pen will run and sometimes smear even acid
free...and pencil really is almost forever - unless you erase it. I just jot
something simple like:

Bird Walk
Placed XXX (date)
Biddeford, Maine

Do any ofyou have an inexpensive place that you buy / get log books? I
have MANY PLB's planned between now and the end of the year, so I can
buy 6-10 (so in bulk - I think). I am hoping since I need more than one
someone can direct me to a good / cheap place to buy them.

I don't care the brand, etc... I just need blank pages - preferably 100
page books... but less is ok too.

Thanks!

I do really well at the dollar store. They have unusual (even
bizarre) notebooks that can be used for logs. They would be great
for PLBs because some of them are just a little bit too large for
regular LBs.

I use blank index cards and bind them with a comb bookbinder. It is very inexpensive. I had the bookbinder- and my cost after the comb and cards is less than 50 cents if I make 2 books for each pack of cards. They are durable, and cheap. You can buy different size combs for different thickness of books.

I use a regular GBC binder, but a friend uses the "pro-click". I would check ebay for a used one.

I also use blank index cords but I bind them with leather cording. It
probably costs me $.25 for each logbook I make!

At Dollar Tree they had 3x5 index cards (blank on one side) SPRIAL
bound, 100 cards, 2 in a pkg @ $1 -- just can't beat that price!

Of course not ever Dollar Tree has the same inventory.

But keep looking.

In fact I still have room in my suitcase - threw in 5 pkgs. I'll
call you when I get to Denver -- you can buzz over to Carolines
(Littleton) and pick them up.
